Classes and Open Play

Introduction to American Mah Jongg.  Join us for an introductory course on the wonderful game of American Mah Jongg! In this session, you'll get your hands on the tiles and a 2025 National Mah Jongg League card so that can get a real feel for the game. We'll introduce you to the goal of the game, the terms used in play, and a breakdown of the tiles and other parts of an American Mah Jongg set. You’ll also learn how to read and understand the NMJL card, set up and deal, and practice the lively “dance of the tiles” known as the Charleston—before diving into your very first round of play. Beginners' Skills. After learning the basics in our Introduction to American Mah Jongg class, you’re ready to sharpen your skills! This course reviews the mechanics of play with a focus on the elements that turn good players into great players. Learn expert tips on what to pass—and what not to pass—during the Charleston, as well as how to confidently select your best hand from the National Mah Jongg League card. The class is designed to build confidence, strengthen strategy, and refine decision-making. Players are encouraged to take this course more than once until they feel solid in both the mechanics of play and the NMJL card. Prior instruction and familiarity with NMJL rules are required. Guided Play. These ongoing sessions are perfect for players who are comfortable with the rules of play but still appreciate a little guidance to strengthen skills and boost confidence. These sessions provide a balance of independent play and expert advice to help you grow as a player. Prior instruction and familiarity with the mechanics of play and NMJL rules are required. General Strategies. In our General Strategies class, you’ll develop essential skills to take your Mah Jongg play to the next level. Learn when and how to switch hands, how to approach “gap” hands, and how to use the power of position to manage risk based on the strength of your hand. We’ll also share expert tips for making the best use of jokers and knowing when it’s time to “dog” your hand. With practical strategies and clear guidance, you’ll gain the confidence to make smarter moves, sharpen your game, and enjoy every round with greater skill and ease. You’ll also begin to glean valuable information from the table and your opponents at every step, setting yourself up for more winning opportunities. Please contact us to get notified when this class gets scheduled.

 

Charleston Strategies. The Charleston is the keystone to American Mah Jongg. By appreciating and harnessing its power, you can set yourself up for more consistent wins. In this class, you’ll practice targeted Charleston exercises that train you to make sharper decisions about what to pass and what to collect. These drills not only strengthen your strategy but also help quicken your pace during this critical phase of the game. Core Strategies. Our Core Strategies class is designed for players who already have a solid grasp on the mechanics of play and are ready to push themselves to new Mah Jongg heights. One of the keys to consistent success is knowing which strategy to apply at each stage of the game. In this class, we break down practical approaches for the early game, mid-game, and end game—equipping you with the insight and confidence to make smarter moves, adapt your play, and maximize your chances of winning. Open Play. These 2½-hour sessions are designed for players who want to enjoy lively play while connecting with other experienced Mah Jongg enthusiasts. To participate, players must have prior instruction and be comfortable playing according to NMJL rules. Beginner Classes at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center. Sheila currently teaches beginner Mah Jongg classes at the Metairie and New Orleans locations of the JCC. In this class, you'll learn the fundamentals of American Mah Jongg. This includes learning what comprises an American Mah Jongg set; how to “wash” the tiles, create— and then break— the wall; how to deal, and do the Charleston. You will also learn the mechanics of play: selecting a hand; drawing, discarding and calling tiles; proper use of jokers; and announcing "Mah Jongg" when you win! Private Beginner Classes. Want to learn Mah Jongg in a more intimate setting where the focus is entirely on you and your group? This small-group class offers up to 10 hours of instruction with one instructor for every table of players (1:4), ensuring personalized guidance and support. Hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic drinks are provided at each session to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
