The Fleur de Mahj team shares a love of mah jongg and each team member brings something different to the teaching experience. Together, we have been playing for over five decades and teaching mah jongg for over three decades. The team's varied experiences in learning, playing, and teaching brings a versatility that best serves players of all ranges of experience.
Carrie didn't learn mah jongg as much as it seeped into her pores as her mother played mah jongg Carrie's entire life. The love of the game is imprinted on her DNA, as is her love of teaching the game to spread the joy it brings her. Carrie has taught many players for many years and brought Sheila into her first live game some 15-odd years ago. It is no surprise, therefore, that Carrie's approach to the game and to teaching is organic and approachable. She takes to heart her refrain to students to "listen to the tiles."
Marcy lived in The Netherlands, Pennsylvania, and California during her 40-year teaching career. When she retired to New Orleans in 2013, learning mah jongg was at the top of her bucket list. Soon she was playing 4 to 5 days per week! Marcy began teaching this beautiful game of mah jongg when she formed a local group in 2017, and it was there that she met Sheila.
Sheila is the founder of Fleur de Mahj and is a member of the MahjLife Instructor Guild. Sheila discovered mah jongg reading the Joy Luck Club in the 1990s but didn't play with others until years later when the mah jongg gods smiled upon her and crossed her path with Carrie's. Since then, she has played with countless players in and around New Orleans and is especially entranced with the history of the game and the evolution of its rules. Her approach to the game and to teaching stems from her desire to discover all the nuances there are to this wonderful game and to share her love of all things mah jongg!
We are located in the Taylor Education Center overlooking the WWII museum in New Orleans. It is a calm, quiet and airy space conducive to relaxing and learning.
